The Challenge:

Feeling constrained by the Covid-19 pandemic, a group of local designers were looking for a way to spark new creative momentum and share it with others. Juxtaproof Studio members Cassie, Bree, and Rachel joined these designers to form Bracks Collective, a collaborative group focused on creativity for its own sake. The group decided to design a custom deck of cards for their first project. The deck would feature threatened, near endangered, endangered, critical and extinct plant, animal, and fungi species.

The Insight:

Each member of Bracks Collective had a unique design style and area of strength, so a deck of cards provided a great way to combine the work into a cohesive project. The artists established some guidelines and a color palette to keep some consistency in the deck, but left much of the creativity up to the individual.

The Solution:

The finished deck included 54 creatures, some well known, and others that don’t get enough notice. The variety of sea, plant, mammal, reptile, avian, and insect life was chosen somewhat randomly but an effort to keep a variety was top of mind. Face cards featured a theme, like having all Queens as Cats, while other animals are shuffled throughout.

The variety in style provides the user with an individual piece of art on each card, and encourages focus on each and every species presented.
